Sheltering Tree . Earth May Publish Your Book

Dear Author,

All my life, I wanted to be a published author. I wrote and wrote and wrote and wrote and felt impaled by every letter of declination publishers sent me.

In  2004, I came to the realization that I had to stop "hoping to be" and start "being" an author. I read every book I could find about what it takes to become published.  And it worked! I love being published so much, that I have taken it as a ministry to help others become published. (And I have read every book I could to ensure this venture is a success.) I retired from teaching in 2020 and started Sheltering Tree . Earth , LLC Publishing in 2021.

We may not be the right house for you, and you may not be the right author for us. But if we are right for each other, both of our dreams will become manifest. We are traditional, not vanity. I will pay you a healthy percentage of royalties and you will work to ensure your book sells. We publish in trade paperback, hardcover, and Kindle.

We will consider any books that are positive, uplifting, supportive, or spiritual in nature.   To gage if your fiction, nonfiction, children/juvenile, or poetry book would fit with our house, ask yourself if it could be used for one of these purposes from Matthew 25:35-36 --

Feed Those Who Hunger After Righteousness

For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat (Matthew 25:35a)

Slake Those Who Thirst for Justice

I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink (Matthew 25:35b)

Turn the Tide on Human Tensions and Discrimination

I was a stranger and you invited me in (Matthew 25:35c)

Facilitate Those Who Need to Become Sufficient in a Trade or Calling

I needed clothes and you clothed me (Matthew 25:36a)

Offer Tools to Those Who Tend to Others

I was sick and you looked after me (Matthew 25:36b)

Enable Those Who Minister to Those Who Face Consequences for Their Actions

I was in prison, and you came to visit me. (Matthew 25:36c)

  • We will not publish horror, graphic violence, or erotica.
  • We would only consider previously published books if the original publishing house has closed.
  • We really do not want to deal with previously self-published books. (Convince me otherwise and I'll listen.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at Friend if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The nonfiction we publish includes sermon and homily collections, biblical history, scriptural commentaries; lessons from the Kabbalah, Torah, Talmud, New Testament,  apocryphal and Early Church  literature; mission and ministerial biographies and autobiographies; and meditation and counseling guidebooks.   We also publish study guides and how-to's which are designed to help someone develop a ministry, hobby, or life-skill.

The fiction, poetry and children/juvenile books we publish exemplify the triumph of grace over sin, joy over sorrow, and hope over despair. Friendship, loyalty, and perseverance are vey important.

You do not need to be a card-carrying member of a church, synagogue, or temple to send us your manuscript. However, if your book does not reflect the spiritual aspects presented here, you might consider researching a different publishing house.

The BISAC code lets the bookstores know where to place your book and lets them know how to compare it with other books (how well did they sell). It is not the plot. It is not a generalized term.  It is not a Dewey Decimal. It is a specific place where your book best fits in a store (on-line or brick-and-mortar). Yes, one book can fit many different places (that's why we ask that you choose three of them). Go to the website by clicking here. there's nothing to buy and there's nothing to download. But this is a very important part of your query.

We would prefer you do NOT send us an already illustrated book (how-to's and/or children's). Just send us the story itself and we'll go from there.

We do have an illustrator we prefer to work with, but the choice of your illustrator  - once the book is contracted -- is up to you.  The illustrator must be willing to work within our specifications and formatting requirements.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

We are a traditional publishing house. We make money only if your book sells, so we only accept books and authors who are interested in a polished, edited, professional product. If all you want is to get  your book in print, (meaning - you are not willing to change one word or correct one comma) there are hundreds of printers, vanity presses, and co-author arrangements eager to take your money. They make money from you and do not care about how well you book sells.

Yes, this sounds a little terse. I am appalled by how many con artists are out there just to take your money. But I am also dismayed how many writers submit their manuscript to us but then aren't willing to listen to professional advice on how to hone the manuscript into a book.

So I will restate the answer to your question. It costs no money to contract with us; it costs faith and dedication to the process of changing a writer into an author and a manuscript into a book.

We pay above industry standards. This means, we pay more than the normal 12-25% offered by most other traditional presses.   Actually, it is shamelessly above industry standards, but I would rather someone comes to ST.E because they believe their book fits into our house than because they are swayed by the royalties.
